Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation (VMMDF) is a music development organisation committed to the promotion and preservation of African music in its diversity. Founded in 1998 by the award-winning internationally-acclaimed musician and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela, VMMDF was officially registered in February 2001 as a non profit making section.21 entity. The Foundation strives to become a leading, unique, authentic and dynamic music development institution in South Africa, and internally, by providing quality music infrastructure within the country. GOALS:
To teach people how to read, play and write music
To develop and/or revive interests among musicians in playing and inventing indigenous African musical instruments such as the Kora, Mbira and Marimba.
To create opportunities and encourage participation by the general public in the appreciation and development of music in general, but African music in particular
To contribute to the development of a vibrant and accessible
OVERVIEW: Musical training through professional mentoring and specialised coaching to the aspirant and talented individuals, mainly from the historically disadvantaged communities of South Africa.
